Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR) (in Montreal)

The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR), offered by Living Arts, is based on the original program founded and directed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Full Catastrophe Living (Delta, 1991) and Wherever You Go, There You Are (Hyperion, 1994), at the University of Massachusetts Medical Health Care Center.

MBSR is an approach to self-care and effective coping with stress, illness and chronic pain, for which there may be no immediate cures. Nor is it a cure. It is an intervention focused on how to live well in the presence of physical and emotional challenges and not only in the absence of them. One's own inner resources become mobilized for healing and for moving to a greater level of health and well-being.
What is Mindfulness?
What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is a state of awareness in which we are paying attention on purpose to our moment-to-moment experience. It is a quality of attention that is grounded in the present moment and free of judgement. We are attending to what is happening while it is happening. It includes an awareness of our reactions and interactions with the world around us. Alongside this awareness, we learn to bring compassion and clarity to our lives and its challenges so that we can respond with greater wisdom and effectiveness.

Who takes the program and how can it be of benefit?
Many people who come to the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program want to experience a deeper sense of connection with themselves. They want to develop more effective ways to cope with a variety of personal challenges and would like to learn how to integrate a more mindful state of awareness in to their daily lives. Essentially it is not the events, people or occurrences in our lives that will determine whether we experience stress but rather how we relate to our experience.

This mindfulness based approach has been shown to be effective in longitudinal studies in which individuals have reported a lasting decrease in both the physical and psychological symptoms associated with:
  • Work/family stress
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Chronic pain/illness
  • Depression
  • High blood pressure
  • GI distress
  • Heart disease
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Fibromyalgia
The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR) offers you:
  • Eight weekly sessions in which mindfulness meditation will be taught and practiced; the body scan, mindfulness- based yoga and sitting meditation.
  • Presentations and group discussion on managing stress and integrating mindfulness in daily life (bilingual).
  • Weekly home practice assignments supported by 3 guided mindfulness meditation recordings and a Stress Reduction Workbook available in both French and English.

Testimonial.....

I would like to thank you, Gina, for offering this wonderful program (MBSR) and for sharing your knowledge. Your kindness and compassion created such a welcoming and safe environment while teaching us how to live more in the present moment and at our own individual pace. I will most definitely miss the program and your guidance, but have gained valuable knowledge and practices that I will continue to implement into my daily life.
