Mindfulness Based YogaThe word YOGA comes from the Sanskrit meaning union, wholeness - union of the physical, mental and spiritual levels of our being. Returning to wholeness, therefore, is the essential meaning of yoga. It is not a religion, but rather a universal tool, a practice through which we come to know all parts of ourselves with compassionate self awareness, fostering a connection with our experiences on all levels.
On the physical level, the benefits of yoga are many. Through a combination of postures, meditation and breathing techniques, the practice will tone and strengthen muscles, relieve stress, chronic pain and stiffness, strengthen the heart and immune system, and stimulate internal organs and glands. Energy resources are liberated as physical and mental tensions are released. The breathing techniques revitalize and cleanse, while the practice of meditation brings increased clarity and inner peace.
Mindfulness Based Yoga is a yoga of consciousness and will do more than stretch you and make you strong. It is a unique way to integrate body, mind and spirit through the development of mindful awareness and through opening to our own inner wisdom. We can then apply the insights gained through this practice to our life off of the yoga mat.
