Mindfulness Based Stress Management Program (in Montreal)

The Mindfulness Based Stress Management Program is unique in its kind in Montreal (click here to read testimonials ). Its design is based on the program founded and directed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, best selling author of Full Catastrophe Living (Delta, 1991) and Wherever You Go There You Are (Hyperion, 1994), at the Stress Management Clinic of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the attention to our moment-to-moment experience, an awareness of our reactions and interactions with the world around us. It develops an internal learning that teaches not only relaxation but also new ways of coping with whatever we are faced with in our lives.

The Mindfulness Based Stress Management Program is an approach to self-care and effective coping with stress, illness and chronic pain, for which there may be no immediate cures. Nor is it a cure. It is an intervention focused on how to live well in the presence of physical and emotional challenges such as stress and pain and not only in the absence of them. One's own inner resources become mobilized for healing and for moving to a greater level of health and well-being.

The underlying premise of this approach is that:

'You are whole and complete just as you are and there is more right than wrong with you at any given moment' - Jon Kabat-Zinn

Who takes the stress management program ?

Many people who come to the program want to experience a deeper sense of connection with themselves as human beings and not only as human doings. They want to develop more effective ways to cope with a variety of personal challenges and would like to learn how to integrate a more mindful state of awareness in to their daily lives.

This mindfulness based approach has been shown to be effective in longitudinal studies in which individuals have reported lasting decrease in both the physical and psychological symptoms associated with:

  • work/family stress
  • anxiety and panic
  • chronic pain/illness
  • depression
  • high blood pressure
  • GI distress
  • heart disease
  • sleep disturbance
  • fibromyalgia
